"Viscontino" school garden

The proposal is submitted to the competion held by the local Monti community and the University of Rome-Tre to solicit ideas of reutilizing the ex-institute Angelo Mai, a former social and public institute, in Monti district of Rome. The proposal intends to remake the place as an elementary school "Viscontino", utilizing the remaining building structures. In addition to new classrooms, an auditorium, a theater, a cafeteria, a gym, workshops and exhibition hall for community craftsmen, an important feature is a school garden to invite children to learn urban ecologies, and families and visitors to spend relaxing time.

Various technologies for reducing the non-renewable energy consumption and for maximizing the use of renewable energy (sun, wind, biomass, rain etc.) are incorporated into the proposal so as to make the place an experimental, educational site on urban ecology in the historic heart of Rome. Wind mills are proposed on the roof-top terrace garden above the old church structure. The electricty generated by the mills are to be used for pumping up rain water (collected through ducts and a canal) to water the garden.
