community garden proposal in Centocelle
Centocelle lies in the periphery of Rome, historically
an important district entertaining imperial villas, but presently
a rather fragmented community without cohesive characteristics.
The proposal is a competition entry. It intends to make a garden
as a working ground for local people. Utilizing an existing vacant
lot (Fontechiari), the garden incorporates various local activities:
meeting place with benches and pergola, BBQ and festa, vegetable,
fruits and herb gardens and compost facility.
A central feature of the garden is the so called ORGANOPONICOS,
raised beds with
organic soil infill. The edge is retained by materials such
as wood, concrete, stone, bricks, etc. It is used when the
ground is contaminated or the soil is too poor to turn into
a garden bed. One set of the beds are raised to waist
level so as to facilitate works by the elderly and those
with difficulty kneeling down.
